Chapter Fourteen
Trudes, you OK if I pick the kids up from school today and take them for pizza? Thought weâd try out that new pop up place on the beach. Join us if you like. Think we need to talk. Cx
I text Carlton back, confirming it is okay and issuing my usual reminder to check that Libby doesnât have anything at the restaurant that contains nuts. He knows as well as I do the potentially fatal consequences if she does because, like me, he witnessed the terrifying reaction she had to a chocolate peanut when she was five years old. Within five minutes her face had swollen up like a purple balloon and she was having difficulty breathing. Thank God we live less than two miles away from A&E. I shudder at the memory. Even though she carries an EpiPen now, I still get nervous. What if she forgets it? What if she reacts and is in too much of a panic to remember where it is or how to use it?
I remind Carlton now, as I always do, about our daughterâs allergy, because I know how laissez-faire he can be. Iâd like to think heâd be responsible where our childrenâs health is concerned, but this is the man whoâd go to Tesco with a shopping list Iâd written out for him, only to return with ten new CDs and a packet of boxer shorts, but half the shopping missing.
I add to my text that I wonât be able to join them for pizza as I promised to go with Mary to the vintage shopâs late night opening to choose a new outfit for her special appearance at WorFest. Although I agree with Carlton that he and I need to talk after our kiss last night, I donât want to cancel on Mary as I know how important this gig is to her, so I tell him Iâll join them around seven, by which time theyâll most likely be on desserts.
I hate not being able to concentrate on work, but I canât stop thinking about last night and what happened between me and Carlton. He left pretty quickly after the kiss. I think he was as shocked it happened as I was. Neither of us said anything about it. I hardly remember him getting up to leave â I think I must have been in a kiss-induced daze somehow, but I seem to recall that he got up, muttered something about an early start, and darted off.
I barely slept all night. I couldnât stop turning things over in my mind. Why had he kissed me? Why did I let him? Why did I like it so much? And the biggest one of all: what happens now?

âI know. Iâll wear this skirt over my head like a veil, be completely naked everywhere else and sing Barry Manilowâs greatest hits.â
âYeah, thatâll be nice.â Still with my mind on what Carlton is going to say when I see him later, I
